Find Today’s Value of Old Dollars in Seconds

Prices from your childhood, an old pay slip or a 2000s mortgage all look small next to today’s numbers. This dollar inflation calculator, a money inflation calculator for any US amount, puts them on the same footing. For example, $100 in 2000 buys about the same as $182.17 in 2024, a cumulative rise of 82.2%.

Built on the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U)

This CPI inflation calculator, also called a consumer price index inflation calculator, uses the US Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. CPI-U tracks what households pay for a fixed basket of goods and services, so it is the standard yardstick for US inflation.

Adjust a Salary or Wage for Inflation

Use it as a salary or wage inflation calculator to check whether a raise kept up with prices. A $50,000 salary in 2019 needed to be about $61,350 in 2024 just to buy the same things. Anything below that is a pay cut in real terms.

Run It Backward With Reverse Inflation

Set the later year as From Year and the earlier one as To Year. The tool then works as a reverse inflation calculator and shows what today’s money was worth in the past. $100 in 2024 equals about $26.27 in 1980 dollars.

US Inflation Rate by Year

The US inflation rate swings a lot from year to year, so the tool doubles as an inflation calculator by year and an inflation rate calculator. Pick any two years to see the total change between them, or use the table below as a quick reference.

Year Average CPI-U Annual inflation rate
2025 321.9 2.6%
2024 313.7 2.9%
2023 304.7 4.1%
2022 292.7 8.0%
2021 271.0 4.7%
2020 258.8 1.2%
2010 218.1 1.6%
2000 172.2 3.4%
1990 130.7 5.4%
1980 82.4 13.5%
1960 29.6 1.5%

Plan Ahead With Future Inflation

For a future inflation estimate, grow today’s amount by an expected yearly rate. At 3% a year, $1,000 today will need about $1,343.92 in ten years to buy the same things. It is the math behind any future inflation calculator and a useful check for savings goals.

US Dollars Only, Not Pounds

This is a US dollar inflation calculator, built for American prices. For a British pound inflation calculator, use UK CPI figures from the Office for National Statistics instead. Mixing US data with pound amounts gives misleading results.

Inflation Calculator FAQs

Quick answers about adjusting money for inflation.

How does an inflation calculator work?

It divides the CPI of the target year by the CPI of the starting year, then multiplies your amount by that ratio. The result is the same buying power in the other year’s dollars.

How do I adjust for inflation by hand?

Use the formula behind every inflation adjustment calculator: adjusted value = amount × (CPI in target year ÷ CPI in starting year). For 2000 to 2024, that is $100 × (313.7 ÷ 172.2) = about $182.

What is $100 from 1960 worth today?

About $1,059.80 in 2024 dollars. Prices rose more than tenfold over that period.

What is the difference between CPI and the inflation rate?

CPI is an index level for a basket of prices. The inflation rate is the percentage change in that index, usually over one year.

What is the average US inflation rate?

From 1913 to 2025, US prices rose about 3.2% a year on average. Single years range from deflation in the 1930s to 13.5% in 1980.

Can I use it as a UK inflation calculator?

No. It uses US CPI-U data only. For the UK, use ONS consumer price data or the Bank of England’s own calculator.

Why do inflation calculators give slightly different results?

Some use annual average CPI, others use a single month. Small gaps of a few cents or dollars are normal. For official figures, check bls.gov.

Is this inflation calculator free?

Yes. It is a free online inflation calculator with no signup, no limits and nothing to install.
