Check Image DPI in Seconds

Printers, publishers and print shops ask for 300 DPI files, but most image viewers hide that number. This DPI checker reads the resolution stored in your image and shows it next to the size it will print at.

See Pixel Size and Print Size Together

DPI alone doesn’t tell you how big a photo will print. The tool shows the pixel dimensions and works out the print size in inches and centimetres, so you know exactly what you’re working with.

Know if Your Image Is Print-Ready at 300 DPI

Next to the detected DPI, the checker shows how large the image would print at 300 DPI, the standard for sharp prints. If that size is smaller than you need, find a larger original before you send it to print.

Image DPI Checker FAQs

Everything about checking image DPI and print size.

What is DPI in an image?

DPI (dots per inch) tells a printer how many pixels to place in each inch of paper. A 3,000-pixel-wide image prints 10 inches wide at 300 DPI, or 20 inches wide at 150 DPI with less detail.

How do I find the DPI of an image on Windows?

Right-click the file, choose Properties and open the Details tab. Look for Horizontal resolution and Vertical resolution under Image.

How do I check the DPI of an image on a Mac?

Open the image in Preview, go to Tools and choose Show Inspector (Cmd+I). The Image DPI appears on the General Info tab.

How do I check DPI in Photoshop?

Go to Image, then Image Size. The Resolution field shows the DPI, which Photoshop labels as pixels per inch.

Why does my image show 72 DPI?

Many cameras, phones and web exports save 72 DPI as a default, or no DPI at all. On screens the number makes no difference; only the pixel dimensions matter. For print, check the size at 300 DPI instead.

How do I work out print size from DPI?

Divide the pixel width and height by the DPI. An image of 2,400 × 3,000 pixels at 300 DPI prints at 8 × 10 inches. Multiply inches by 2.54 for centimetres.

Can I change the DPI of an image here?

No. This tool checks DPI but doesn’t change it. To print larger at good quality, you need more pixels, not just a higher DPI number.

Is the image DPI checker free?

Yes. Check the DPI of as many images as you like, free, with no signup and no software to install.
