LLM Token Estimator

Estimate GPT, Claude and Gemini token usage for any text

The LLM Token Estimator shows how many tokens a piece of text is likely to use in popular large language models. Paste a prompt, document or chat message and instantly see its character count, word count and estimated token usage for GPT, Claude and Gemini side by side.

Because API pricing and context windows are measured in tokens, a quick estimate helps you plan costs, keep prompts within model limits and decide when to shorten or split long content.

Token counts are rule-of-thumb estimates based on published character-per-token ratios, not the exact output of each provider's tokenizer.

Key Benefits

Why people use this tool every day

Plan API costs

Most AI APIs charge per token. Knowing the approximate size of your input helps you estimate spend before you make a request.

Stay within context limits

Check whether a long prompt or document is likely to fit inside a model's context window before it gets cut off.

Compare models at a glance

See GPT, Claude and Gemini estimates together, so you can compare how the same text is counted by each model family.

Instant results

No setup, API key or account needed. Paste your text and get counts in a second.

How It Works

Get your result in four simple steps
1

Paste your text

Paste a prompt, article, transcript or any other text into the input box.
2

Click Estimate

Press the Estimate button to analyse the text you entered.
3

Review the counts

Check the characters, words and estimated GPT, Claude and Gemini tokens.
4

Adjust and repeat

Trim or split your content if needed, then estimate again or use Clear to start over.

Helpful Tips

Get better results with these suggestions

Treat results as estimates

Counts are based on average characters per token (about 4 for GPT and Gemini, about 3.5 for Claude), not each provider's exact tokenizer.

Leave a safety margin

Keep roughly 10–20% headroom below a model's limit, especially for code, non-English text or text with many symbols.

Count the response too

Context windows include the model's answer as well as your prompt, so reserve space for the output you expect.

Shorten long prompts

Remove repeated instructions, boilerplate and unnecessary examples to cut tokens without losing meaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions

What is a token in a large language model?

A token is a small chunk of text that a language model reads and writes, such as a whole word, part of a word or a punctuation mark. In English, one token is roughly four characters on average.

How accurate are the token estimates?

They are rule-of-thumb estimates based on published average character-per-token ratios. They are usually close for normal English prose but can differ for code, numbers, emojis or other languages. For exact counts, use the provider's official tokenizer.

Why do GPT, Claude and Gemini show different numbers?

Each model family uses its own tokenizer, so the same text can be split into a different number of tokens. The tool applies a separate ratio for each family to reflect this.

Does the estimate include the model's response?

No. It only estimates the tokens in the text you paste. The model's reply uses additional tokens, which also count toward the context window and usually toward your bill.

Is the LLM Token Estimator free to use?

Yes. The tool is completely free and does not require an account, API key or sign-up.
