How many words is a page?

About 500 words single-spaced, or about 250 words double-spaced, using a 12-point font with 1-inch margins. Headings, images, font choice and spacing all change this, so paste your text into the word counter for the exact number.

How many words in a paragraph should I aim for?

Most paragraphs run 100 to 200 words, or roughly 3 to 8 sentences. Writing for the web works best on the shorter side, 2 to 4 sentences, because most readers skim on a phone. The paragraph count shows how many you've written.

How many characters is this text, with and without spaces?

Paste the text and click Count. You'll see two totals: characters without spaces and characters with spaces. Most platforms, including search results and social networks, count spaces, so use the "with spaces" number unless a form tells you otherwise.

What's the difference between a word counter and a character counter?

A word count measures length for essays, articles and applications. A character count matters where space is tight, such as SMS, meta descriptions and ad headlines. This page works as both, so you can count words and count characters in one place.

Can I use it as a letter counter?

Yes, with one catch. The characters total (without spaces) is the closest thing to a letter count, but it also includes numbers and punctuation. For a pure letter count, remove numbers and symbols before you paste. The same char counter works for usernames, codes and passwords.

How accurate is the word count?

The tool counts every group of characters separated by a space as one word, the same basic rule most word processors use. Small differences from Microsoft Word or Google Docs usually come from how each tool treats hyphens, dashes, numbers and URLs.

Can I count words in a Word or Google Docs file?

Yes. Open the file, select all, copy and paste the text into the box. File upload isn't supported, but pasting works for any length, from one line to a long report.
