Aspect Ratio Calculator FAQs

Everything about calculating and using aspect ratios.

What is aspect ratio?

Aspect ratio is the proportion between an image’s width and height, written as width:height. A 16:9 image is 16 units wide for every 9 units tall, whatever its size in pixels.

How do I calculate aspect ratio?

Divide the width and height by their greatest common divisor. For 1920 × 1080 the greatest common divisor is 120, so the ratio is 16:9. The calculator does this for you in one click.

How do I find the height from a width and a ratio?

Height = width × ratio height ÷ ratio width. For a 1600-pixel-wide image at 16:9, that’s 1600 × 9 ÷ 16 = 900 pixels.

What resolutions are 16:9?

1280 × 720 (HD), 1920 × 1080 (Full HD), 2560 × 1440 (QHD) and 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD) all share the 16:9 aspect ratio.

What resolutions are 4:3?

640 × 480, 800 × 600, 1024 × 768 and 1600 × 1200 are all 4:3. You’ll see it on older monitors, many tablets and most phone camera photos.

What is the difference between 16:9 and 9:16?

They’re the same shape, rotated. 16:9 is landscape, used for YouTube, TVs and monitors. 9:16 is portrait, used for vertical video such as Reels, TikTok and Stories.

Why does my image look stretched after resizing?

The new width and height don’t match the original aspect ratio. Solve the missing side with the calculator, or lock the proportions in your editor, and the image keeps its shape.

Is the aspect ratio calculator free?

Yes. Calculate, simplify and solve aspect ratios as often as you need, free, with no signup or install.
