Why won't my Base64 string decode?

Most failures come from a string that was cut off, extra spaces or line breaks, or quotes copied along with it. Copy the whole value again and paste only the string.

What does data:image/png;base64 mean?

It's the data URI prefix. It tells the browser the file type, here PNG, and that the text after the comma is Base64 image data.

How can I tell which format a Base64 image is?

Check the prefix: image/png, image/jpeg, image/gif, image/webp or image/svg+xml. With no prefix, look at the start: iVBOR is PNG, /9j/ is JPEG, R0lGOD is GIF and UklGR is WebP.

How do I decode a Base64 image in JavaScript or Python?

In JavaScript, set the string as an img src with a data URI prefix, or use atob() and a Blob to save it. In Python, base64.b64decode() returns the image bytes.

Is a Base64 image bigger than the original file?

Yes. The text is about 33% larger than the file it holds. Decoding it gives you the smaller binary image back.
